Work camp
Conditions, cost & dates
Conditions
We will sleep in hammocks, in a spartan wooden house or tent. In January (the Summer) the temperature could reach 40° and at night is usually about 26°C. In August(the Winter) the day time temperature could reach 30°C but during the night the temerature sometimes drops to 14°C because of the rain. Lunch and dinner will be provided by FirstFlora and will be strictly vegetarian, with rice, beans, eggs, fruits and vegetables from local sources. At the weekend, the transfer from reserve to Ithaca (and vice versa) will be by bus, or on foot, walking through the jungle for two and a half hours to Rio de Contas, and then if possible by boat down the river to its mouth (where dolphins often come up to the surface). The volunteer must be in excellent physical condition because of the humidity, temperature el'escursione heat. Their baggage must be only a backpack carried from the shoulder for easy transportation and the total load not exceeding 15 kg. It needs to be noted that the locals only speak Portuguese; FirstFlora operators will always be present, but of course a basic knowledge of Portuguese is useful and you will get more out of your trip by speaking the language yourself.
Dues
Total costs 410 euro (100 euro to be paid as a deposit, 310 euros to be paid on arrival at the camp), plus the card of you locol ONG (15 or 30 euros). The international flight is charged to the participant (at around 600-1200 euros). The nearest international airport is to Salvador de Bahia, you can then reach Itacare Ilheus via air or bus. The cost of meals, accommodation and transport in Brazil during the field work shall be borne by FirstFlora except breakfast and meals on Saturdays and Sundays at Ithaca. The volunteer must be present at Itacaré or Camamu before 10.00 am on the first day of camp. FirstFlora give all the support, if required, for reservations and logistics. FirstFlora will organise your transfer to the Reserva Natural da Janaina Itacaré and your return to Itacare.
