Natural Reserve Janaina
Reserva Natural Janaina
Natural Janaina Reserve is located about 10 km as the crow flies from Itacaré, south of Salvador de Bahia, in the Baixo Sul, in Central Corridor of Atlantic Forest, 95% of which is made up of individual private properties and where the forest is extremely fragmented.
The Atlantic Forest is home to many endangered species, including different types of macaque, including Muriqui, which is the largest endemic mammal in Brazil. From colonial times the Atlantic Forest has been intensively cut to give space to the cities, sugar cane plantations, cocoa, coffee, cotton, rubber, grazing, mining of gold, diamonds, and in recent times to eucalyptus. From 1980 to today Southern Bahia is responsible for cutting 85% of the Atlantic Forest. Today the bioma is less than 8%, thus threatening the water supply, since most of the city is situated in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. In addition to the loss of biodiversity, one of the biggest problems is the lack of clean water and its increasing scarcity.
