Boa Nova Chapada Diamantina: ornithological features

Boa Nova

 The region of Boa Nova(Good News) located in the north-east of the plateau of Conquista is a region rich in rivers, waterfalls and caves with a unique variety of vegetation and animal species. The area has endemic species of birds, elements of the mountain forests of the Atlantic Forest biome close to the  endemic species of Caatinga biome. Over 300 species of birds, 10 of which are endangered. This great variety of species can be explained because it is a transition area between the Serra da Uricana to the east, where the Atlantic Forest starts and Caatinga to the west. This unique landscape creates the Forest where bromelias and orchids live in harmony with a wide variety of cactus. The extent of the original forest remains at 2.6%. The Forest of Cipó is the habitat of the endemic Slenter Antbird (Rhopornis ardesiacus), one of the most rare birds in Brazil, and Narrow-billed Antwren (Formicivora iheringi).

 
Key Species: Slender Antbird,  Narrow-billed Antwren, Caatinga Antwrens, Hangnest Tody, Silvery-cheeked Antshrike and Stripe-backed Antbird, Spot-backed Antshrike, Tufted Antshrike, Spot-breasted Antvireo, Rio de Janeiro Antbird, Ferruginous and Ochre-rumped Antbirds, White-bibbed Antbird, Bahia Spinetail, Least Pygmy-Owl, Frilled Coquette, Crescent-chested Puffbird Yellow-eared Woodpecker, Pallid Spinetail, Striated Softtail, White-collared Foliage-gleaner, Yellow-lored Tody-Flycatcher, Oustalet's Tyrannulet, Grey-hooded Attila, Gilt-edged Tanager, Reddish-bellied Parakeet, Scale-throated Hermit, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Black-eared Fairy, Black-throated Trogon,  Swallow-wing, Black-necked Aracari,  Yellow-throated Woodpecker, Black-billed Scythebill, Swallow-tailed Manakin, Pin-tailed Manakin, Drab-breasted Bamboo-Tyrant, Eared Pygmy-Tyrant, Tropical Pewee, Greenish Mourner, Chestnut-crowned Becard, White-necked and Cocoa Thrushes, White-browed Warbler, Red-crowned Ant-Tanager, Black-goggled, Golden-chevroned Tanagers, Orange-bellied, Chestnut-bellied, Golden-rumped Euphonias, Brown Tinamou, Mantled Hawk, Swallow-tailed Cotingas. Rufous-sided Crake and Blackish Rail, Campo Flicker, Pale-legged Hornero, Yellow-browed Tyrant, Brown-chested Martin, White-bellied Seedeater, Green-headed Tanagers.
 

Chapada Diamantina

 The Chapada Diamantina (Diamond Plateau, the region was rich in mines) occupies a central position in the state of Bahia, about 450 kilometres west of the colonial Salvador. The main rivers of Bahia hiding their sources in the slopes of the Chapada which consist of mountain ranges and plateaus. The Rio de Contas (River of Accounts because the diamonds and cocoa were being counted on its edges before being shipped to Salvador and then to Europe) and the Rio Paraguaçu have carved deep canyons in the mountains and plains, creating masterpieces of divine beauty, like the waterfall of Fumaça (waterfall of Smoke), the caves of Iraquara and Poço Encantado (Enchanted Well).

Yellow-legged Tinamous Golden-capped Parakeet Spotted Piculet. Speckled Chachalaca, Pale-vented Pigeon, Violet-capped Woodnymph, Versicoloured Emerald, Surucua Trogon, Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Streaked Xenops, White-shouldered Fire-eye, Yellow Tyrannulet, Greenish Elaenia, Eastern Sirystes, Black-tailed Tityra Green-winged Saltator, Rufous-sided Pygmy-Tyrant.
